Skype for Business Online (SfBO) has been a valuable tool for many businesses in Australia since April 2015.  The recent announced that SfBO will be turned off on July 31, 2021 means those businesses need to get ready for change.

Microsoft Teams is the next chapter in the enterprise communications vision from Microsoft replacing SfBO.  After more than two years in market Teams is now ready for use! Hence, if you’re a current SfBO customer, you need to consider planning your migration now.  We're committed to helping customers through the process enabling the use of the rich new features of Teams helping improve the way people work.

Between now and the end of July 2021, current SfBO customers will experience no change in service and be able to continue to add new users as needed. However, starting September 1, 2019, Microsoft will onboard all new Office 365 customers directly to Teams for instant messaging, meetings, and calling.  Note that the Skype Consumer service and Skype for Business Server will both be unaffected by this announcement.

“…But we have Skype for Business Server 2015/2019”

Great! If you are running Skype for Business Server 2015, support will be retired in just over 12 months (October 2020). So now is the critical time to get serious about Microsoft Teams and plan your migration.

Those customers running Skype for Business Server 2019, support will retire in December 2023, so you have some time before you need to act.

“We already have and are using Microsoft Teams - does this announcement still affect me?”

No, but are you using Teams to its full potential?  Microsoft Teams is not just a like for like replacement of Skype for Business but a new “Hub for Teamwork” providing a new platform for businesses to collaborate, communicate and consolidate their principles of the modern workplace. Microsoft Teams enables the modern workplace through the adoption of new business workflows , telephony, meetings and integration with existing line of business applications such as CRM, ERP and LMS, while fully integrating with the rest of the Office 365 suite.
