The tech solutions industry is in a constant state of change. As oxymoronic as that sounds, this has never been truer over the last 6 months.
Extraordinary circumstances around the world has drastically changed the work landscape, and things aren’t going to be the same. Highly technical staff have become a hot commodity today, but what happens if you can’t find one, or worse, lose one? Aidan Whitehouse, MOQdigital’s Operational Services Lead, shares his insights on how to tackle this potential issue.
Many of these circumstances impact Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as they may not have the same resources and capabilities available to them that larger companies would have access to. Relating specifically to IT services, some SMEs rely on a single system administrator. A proverbial ‘Jack of all Trades’ looking after a wide range of environments, stretching their capacity to their limits. Other SMEs have a dedicated team member looking after specific technologies within their domains. Because SMEs often don’t have access to the same operational capacity that larger businesses do, they are more prone to risk. What happens if these essential personnel are unable to work? Whether they leave in search of greener pastures or are on a leave of absence, the result for your enterprise remains the same: your operations are impacted and often unsecured, and you need to find a way to supplement that lost expertise.
Regardless of the size of your team, three typical solutions come to mind.
The first option: cross-train. If you have resources with the capacity and capability to learn and support new technologies, then having a high performer within your team stepping up is a natural choice. They know the business and know the other platforms being used. The problem with this solution is that there isn’t always enough time in the day. Cross-training your team member will add to their current workload and, depending on the technology, be both a timely and costly exercise, particularly if external vendor certifications are required. Another downside with this option is that although the cross-trained team member may be able to work through resolving incidents, they may struggle to find the time to build the expertise to proactively maintain the technology.
The second option: hire. In many situations this is a perfectly viable option; one person out, one person in. Having a dedicated team member on site means that you have somebody there physically to deliver for the business and get their hands dirty on-site. There are some considerations before diving straight into this option. Do you need a full time replacement? Some technologies that your key team member manages may have been transitioned to cloud services. This may be the perfect opportunity to realise some savings. Are you looking for a unicorn? You have sat down with the technical resource and listed the technologies that they manage, often finding a new staff member with experience with that same blend of technology is nigh on impossible – a unicorn. Bear in mind that there will likely be some level of training required to cover your technology stack regardless of the new team member.
